Minty and Garlicy Yogurt Dip / Haydari is probably one of the easiest and common Turkish dips you can find. You can put it together in just 2 minutes, do not miss it.
Where does the name Haydari come from?
The name of this dip “Haydari” always made me think that it has a story behind it because Haydar is a common Turkish name. After a little research, I found out that the word “Haydar” means lion and what a coincidence the Turkish raki is called “lion’s milk”. So perhaps this dip is called haydari to remind people to enjoy it with raki and fish dishes.
What to serve Haydari with?
Actually, there is no limit about what to serve Haydari with. You can serve it even with crackers, kebaps, spread it onto wraps like hummus or just dip a cucumber stick and enjoy it any time you feel like it.
Tips about the recipe:
The recipe will turn out better if you use strained yogurt. If not available try to use parts of yogurt that are not very watery. If you want to make your own strained yogurt, you can do so by putting your yogurt into a cheesecloth and waiting or pressing down to get rid of the excess water in the yogurt.
Adjust the amount of garlic and salt according to your taste.
Haydari can be found ready made in some countries, but it is so easy to make, not worth buying.
As it has garlic in it, it is better to prepare just before serving and not keeping it for too long. Serve chilled and enjoy.
