Ingredients

Butter, sugar, chocolate, cocoa, eggs, flour, baking powder and vanilla are the ingredients. Nothing extraordinary or expensive. Bring them together to make a delicious brownie with this recipe.

I have cake and cookie recipes in my blog without butter, but I have to remind you that butter gives a fuller taste to what you bake. Sugar is used to cut the bitterness of the chocolate. Brown sugar can be replaced with granulated sugar or other healthier options.

You might think that only 1¼ cup of all-purpose flour is too little, but there is no mistake. Not adding too much flour will make your brownie fudgy.

What else can I add to a brownie?

You can add chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, Oreo pieces, raisins, coarsely chopped walnuts, espresso powder, some rum or even chopped almonds. I also advise a pinch of salt to boost the flavors.

Why use a box mix if you can easily make your own brownies?

How to Make Brownies

This recipe is easy to make. You only need one mixing bowl, a small saucepan, a heatproof bowl and a spoon. Nice to haves are a fine-mesh sieve, a whisk or a mixer. Just follow these steps:

  1. Melt the chocolate and butter. Create your own Bain Marie, do not let the fancy word scare you. Just put some water in a saucepan and place a smaller heat-proof bowl on top and in it put the chocolate and the butter. The water should not be more than 3-5 centimetres (1-2 inches) high. Let the water simmer over low-medium heat until the chocolate and the butter melts. Set aside to cool. You can use a microwave if you choose to, I do not have one so I cannot provide details about how long it will take.
  2. Sieve the flour, baking powder and cocoa. You can do this onto oven paper or even a paper towel. If you do not have a sieve, you can skip this step but at least make sure to aerate your flour to make a better measurement with the cups. Aerating flour simply means stirring around with a spoon before measuring.
  3. Mix eggs and sugar. Now you need a mixing bowl. Whisk the eggs and the sugar either with a whisk or with a mixer. Make them well blended. You do not need to turn them into a white stiff cream. Also, add the vanilla and this stage and salt if using.
  4. Mix everything together. Pour the flour mixture onto the egg mixture. Use a spoon or a spatula just enough to mix everything together.
  5. Ready for the oven. Pour the batter into a 20 centimetre (7 inches) square baking pan. After you pour the batter into the baking pan tap the pan on your worktop to make the batter flat.
  6. Baking. Bake the brownies in a preheated oven at 170° Celsius (325° F) for about 40 minutes. Start checking after 20 minutes. Stick in a toothpick in the middle of the baking pan. If the toothpick comes out wet bake more, if there are only a few crumbles your brownie is ready to be taken out of the oven. Do not wait to see a clean toothpick, or else your brownies might be a cake now.
